Last month, a telescope in Hawaii spotted a mysterious object heading for Earth. What was first thought to be an asteroid, ended up being a lander of an old rocket. The lander belonged to NASA’s failed moon-landing mission known as Surveyor 2, that launched in 1966. The lander discarded from the rocket in space and ended up crashing into the moon, then into orbit around the sun and was expected to never be seen again.

The lander is about 26 feet long and is approaching earth around 1,500 mph, which would be slow if it were a standard asteroid. Paul Chodas the one who found the rocket part says “I’m pretty jazzed about this, it’s been a hobby of mine to find one of these and draw such a link, and I’ve been doing it for decades now.”
