Two journalists, Maria Ressa from the Philippines and Dmitri Muratov of Russia have won the Nobel Peace Prize. They were recognized for “their courageous fight for freedom of expression, which is a precondition for democracy and lasting peace.” Ressa was the Time magazine person of the year. Also, Mr. Muratov has been fighting in Russia for freedom of speech for years. In Russia he led the independent newspaper, Novaya Gazeta, even though he has faced death threats, and has lost multiple reporters on the way. Both of these people have greatly contributed to the journalism world.
