How Social Media Affects Aardvarks

A while ago, I put out a form about how social media has negatively affected us throughout the building. As it turns out, people had a lot to say.

First of all, only 66% of people who responded, have access to social media. Of those 66%, 80% of people said that social media has affected them negatively. People said social media affected them negatively because “It has caused me to view myself in a worse manner”. Also they said that “It also hurts to see your friends hanging out outside of school.” I know I can relate to this, and know a lot of people who relate to this as well.

Also, someone said “When I get on social media I feel bad about myself”. Things like these have been said by a lot of kids over the past couple of years, and it is completely normal to feel this way. But social media can have good affects as well. Someone said “I would always watch Minecraft YouTube videos when my parents argued in the background. It was a way to escape reality around me.” This is just one of the few ways that social media can be good.

Overall, social media can have both positive and negative affects on kids. It can make us compare ourselves to others, we could get bullied, and much more can come out of social media. But if we’re careful and limit our social

media use, then we can use social media safely. It’s important to remember that although there is a lot going on in social media, it’s important to stay close

to our family and friends outside of just social media. Also, it’s important to know that when you get feelings of being left out, depression, anxiety, and loneliness, you are not alone. There are other people like you who get these feelings when they look on social media. Finally, I encourage you to try to take some time away from social media and see how it affects you.
